First edition. Pinkerton, an agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society, toured Russia extensively between 1813 and 1822. His observations on the various cities, the inhabitants and their customs, offer an insight into the country at the time. Pinkerton discusses serfdom, the Jewish population and other minorities, as well as reporting on prisons and very remote communities.
