Celebrating 50 years in true style, this strictly roots 1975 dub classic returns on translucent red vinyl - where Tommy McCook's smooth fire sax rides the heavyweight riddims of the Aggravators, deep-cut produced by reggae powerhouses Bunny Lee and King Tubby.
Tommy McCook, one of reggae's most revered saxophonists, was a driving force behind the sound of Jamaican music. As an original member of The Skatalites and later a key figure in the Supersonics, McCook helped shape the development of ska, rocksteady, and early reggae. His signature, smooth yet sharp saxophone lines became synonymous with the genre, lending a sense of sophistication and warmth that could be felt in every note.
On Brass Rockers, McCook's sax takes center stage, with the backing of the mighty Aggravators - a band known for their heavy, rhythmic precision. This album was crafted by the legendary duo of producer Bunny Lee and sound engineer King Tubby, whose partnership created some of the most innovative and influential music in reggae history. Known for their creative prowess, they reworked a series of percussive riddims, giving them a dubwise makeover.
The result is a collection of tracks that blend McCook's powerful horn lines with Tubby's atmospheric, experimental soundscapes, while Bunny Lee's masterful production ensures the grooves hit hard. The music is drenched in dub effects, with deep basslines that anchor the tracks, crisp drum patterns, and swirling reverb that would come to define the sound of reggae-dub in the 70s. The tracks pulse with energy, yet there's a smoothness to the flow that captures McCook's soulful style - a perfect marriage of jazz, dub, and reggae that sounds fresh and timeless.
