José Iturbi was a pianist and conductor who became a radio personality in the United States. His fame was such that Hollywood turned him into a movie star. Between 1943 and 1951, José Iturbi appeared in ten feature films, often playing himself. As a child, Iturbi played in the cafés of Valencia when he was barely ten years old. It was there that he was discovered by Emil von Sauer, who was astonished and managed to raise the necessary funds to send the young man to the Paris Conservatory. His efforts were rewarded in 1913 with a First Prize.
The LPs he recorded in Paris at the end of the '50s display his genius for almost pictorial expression. This has hardly dimmed with time; on the contrary, we notice everywhere a rhythmic vivacity, a brio and an imagination that give his Debussy and Ravel performances a frank sensuality.
