This opera epitomizes romantic opera and follows in the tradition of Weber’s works, granting significant focus to extended vocal passages and their lyrical plasticity while beginning to develop a denser orchestral fabric. This expansion, marked by the increased presence of woodwinds and the creation of a symphonic space, foreshadows Wagner’s unique orchestral color, culminating in Parsifal.
The Prelude perfectly illustrates this evolution, with an almost motionless dynamic and an enchanting stretching of sound. In this recording conducted by Rudolf Kempe, unquestionably one of the greatest German conductors of the century, the atmosphere of Lohengrin is immediately established: a blend of reflection and contemplation, carried by incredible orchestral transparency, a velvety texture, and a warm tenderness.
The cast is flawless, with Élisabeth Grümmer unmatched in the role of Elsa. Christa Ludwig and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau portray a villainous couple without caricature. The performance of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is also noteworthy. This studio recording truly represents the best that this format can offer.
