It is all heartwood that's been air dried to maintain the natural coloration. The colors are an overall medium brown with bands of darker brown grain. Black Walnut Block BW446 4.7" x 4.7" x 11.2" 6 lbs. This is an outstanding end-grain Black Walnut block. It is all heartwood that's been air-dried to maintain the natural coloration. The colors are an overall medium brown with bands of darker-brown grain. Air-dried Black Walnut is so much prettier than kiln-dried, and this piece is a real beauty. This block has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. This piece has been planed on four sides (S4S). As you can see one corner has a void -- this void measures about 3" long by 1.5" wide and 1" deep. You could choose to fill with epoxy or simply turn it off if working on the lathe. This piece has a few tight knots; they have with no visible cracks or open space on any that I can see externally. They give a beautiful swirl to the grain. |
