Introducing the New 1.25" Rack & Pinion Focuser from Lunt Solar

Focusing mechanisms represent a critical interface between primary optical systems and observation equipment in telescopic applications. While helical focusers have historically been employed in entry-level and solar telescope systems, their inherent mechanical limitations significantly compromise optical performance. Common deficiencies in helical focuser design include excessive backlash, limited load capacity, mechanical instability under thermal cycling, and inadequate precision for high-magnification applications.

The transition from helical to rack and pinion focusing systems addresses these fundamental limitations through superior mechanical design principles and precision CNC manufacturing techniques.

Technical Specifications and Design Analysis

Mechanical Construction

The Lunt Solar 1.25" focuser employs CNC-machined aluminum and brass components, providing optimal thermal expansion characteristics and corrosion resistance for even the most rigorous astronomical applications. The choice of high quality materials reflects our ongoing commitment to the continued production of world class products.

Rack and Pinion Assembly

The focusing mechanism utilizes a precision rack and pinion drive system capable of supporting 6-8 pounds of equipment load. This load capacity represents a significant improvement over typical helical focusers, which commonly exhibit structural failure or excessive deflection under loads exceeding 2-3 pounds.

Key Specifications:

  • Focuser Size: 1.25"
  • Draw Tube Drive: Rack and Pinion
  • Draw tube travel: 0.5"
  • Rotatable: Yes
  • Compression Ring: Yes
  • Positioning accuracy: ±0.002 inches (±0.051mm)
  • Load capacity: 6-8 pounds (2.7-3.6 kg)
  • Backlash: <0.001 inches when properly adjusted
  • Materials: CNC machined Aluminum and Brass

Internal Brake System

The integrated brake system addresses gravitational moment loading through a controlled friction mechanism.

  • Variable drag control
  • Consistent friction characteristics
  • Positive locking capability
  • Reduced mechanical stress when locked

This design eliminates the focus drift commonly experienced with helical focusers, where thread wear and thermal expansion create unpredictable positioning errors.

Compression Ring Clamping System

The focuser incorporates a brass compression ring system for accessory retention, replacing conventional set screw mechanisms. This approach provides several technical advantages:

  • Uniform clamping force distribution around the full circumference of inserted accessories
  • Elimination of point-stress concentrations that can damage precision optical components
  • Reduced risk of optical misalignment due to asymmetric clamping forces
  • Improved repeatability in accessory positioning

Performance Comparison: Rack and Pinion vs. Helical Systems

Precision and Repeatability

Helical focusers suffer from inherent precision limitations due to thread manufacturing tolerances and wear characteristics. Typical helical systems exhibit:

  • Backlash values of 0.005-0.015 inches
  • Non-linear focus response due to thread irregularities
  • Progressive degradation in precision over operational life

In contrast, the Lunt rack and pinion system maintains consistent precision through its mechanical advantage design and precision manufacturing tolerances.

Load Handling Capability

The fundamental weakness of helical focusers lies in their inability to support modern astronomical accessories. Heavy eyepieces, filter wheels, and imaging equipment create moment loads that exceed the structural capacity of threaded focusing mechanisms, resulting in:

  • Focus position drift under equipment load
  • Mechanical binding in threaded interfaces
  • Accelerated wear and eventual failure

The rack and pinion design distributes these loads across multiple engagement points, providing superior structural integrity.

Applications and Compatibility

The Lunt Solar 1.25" focuser is specifically designed for retrofit applications where helical focusers have proven inadequate. Primary applications include:

  • Solar telescope systems requiring precise focus control for imaging and visual observation
  • Refractor telescopes where helical focuser limitations compromise performance
  • Astrophotography setups demanding repeatable focus positioning
  • High-magnification applications where mechanical stability is critical

For astronomical systems currently limited by helical focuser performance, the upgrade to rack and pinion technology provides immediate and measurable improvements in optical performance and operational reliability.

I got 6 years use out of it and just re-ordered a new one! Best grill cover I’ve ever purchased.
Size: 50 Inch, Color: black, Size: 50 Inch, Color: black
Very durable! I noticed earlier this spring that mine was starting to rip after several strong spring wind storms. I knew I had had it for several years but I wasn’t sure how long. I went in my orders page and saw that I ordered it back in 2020 so I got 6 years out of it!! Note that it stays outside on the deck all year round, and that includes during Northeast US winters with frigid temperatures and snow and I only now started to see the tears in it this spring. The tear started at the top of the grill, and actually started falling apart more after I touched it. Refer to the attached photos of mine after 6 years. I think it’s very durable for sitting outside for 6 years and only now only starting to show wear . You can also see how it didn’t really fade despite getting full afternoon sunlight. The velcro ties at the bottom, are also a plus as far as getting it to stay in place and not blow off. That’s why I definitely just repurchased the same one. Hopefully, I will get at least 6 years out of the new one when it arrives tomorrow.

Water Shoes for 3-Week Trip to Amazon, Machu Picchu and the Galapagos
Size: 10.5, Color: Blue/Grey
Bought these shoes (along with a pair of Merrell Gore-TEX Moab Speed 2 GTX) for a three-week trip through some pretty eclectic weather and terrain. I selected these over some much more expensive brands and was very happy with my decision. I typically wear a size 11 athletic shoe (I measure a 10.5), but the 11–11.5 Humtto shoes were way too large and good not get a good fit. I returned that pair, and downsized to the 10.5. They fit me perfectly. Before leaving on the trip I used them to work out at the gym and do some light hiking. They were first seriously tested in the Amazon. The soles provide pretty darn good traction, and they can be worn with or without socks. Because of their hiking and quick drying capabilities, I ended up using these shoes about 50% of the trip. They look great, are comfortable, can be adjusted for fit, and have a decent (medium) arch and heel padding. They are not zero drop from heel to toe, but pretty close. The EVA midsole and memory foam insole for cushioning is great, but do not make the mistake I made by heating it on a heater to accelerate drying. It warped the insole a bit (they are still usable). These are great and survived some pretty extensive testing throughout Peru and Ecuador. If you are stepping into some pretty questionable conditions, these sure are a great back up to your hiking shoes when it may get sloshy and dry shoes are required for the next day.

Excellent shoes for what you’re buying them.
Size: 12, Color: Black
My 2nd pair of this brand. These are awesome. Easy to come off and get on. They stay cool in the summer, they are comfortable with or without socks. I use them in lake and pool, and they still look new. Very inexpensive, and for a change they look actually nicer in person than in the photos. I dont know how they would be doing any athletics but for everything else, including walking a lot and standing for hours, they worked great.

Surprisingly awesome!
Size: 10.5, Color: Dark Gray/Beige
I have only been wearing these for a few days so I may have to revise the review over time, but so far these shoes are absolutely outstanding. If you owned and enjoyed the original Salomon TechAmphibians, later ruined with new designs by the maker, these are their natural heirs. I took a chance on these shoes since the design is very similar. They are lightweight and comfortable and they provide great footbed support whether loose or tightly laced. Like the early TechAmphibians, they also have the cool feature of a collapsing heel upper, allowing their use as slides. They are also half the price that the Salomons sold even 10 or more years ago. The sole has an aggressive tread pattern and is quite grippy wet or dry. I measure as 10.5 D on the shoe size device but almost no shoes in that size fit me in the last few years. I got the 11-11.5 size first but it was swimming on me. 10.5 fits well with a bit of extra room so I can wear them with or without socks.

Great shoes
Size: 10, Color: Grey, Size: 10, Color: Grey
I got 2 pairs of these specifically for a water rafting trip. The first pair was a little large, so I went down a half size ( and gave the larger pair to my son). They are comfortable, even for wide feet - although after a long day of use in the water, there was some chaffing on the outsides of my feet. It loosened up a bit across my wide foot, after getting wet. These worked great! They have adjustable strap across the back, that pulls tight on the outside. the laces are elastic and tighten by pulling and then pushing the stopper down onto the laces. They didn't slip (loosen) but, to get them tight, I had excessive amount of laces hanging out (had to tuck them into the tongue.
