He is making a dark lager — patient, unhurried, the way good things are always made. The malt is roasting. The hops are in. The air smells like something ancient and honest, the way America used to smell before everything got convenient and plastic-wrapped.

We got to thinking about those hops.

Brewers have known for a long time what the rest of us are only now catching on to: hops condition. They strengthen. They leave hair with a weight and shine that no bottle of translucent blue gel from a big box store has ever managed to replicate. Pair them with rice bran oil, cocoa butter, peppermint, tea tree, clary sage, and rosemary, and you have something that belongs in a serious person's shower — not a cluttered shelf full of products with names like "Sport Fresh" and "Arctic Blast."
