Capt Charles Biddle was born in Andalusia, Pennsylvania in 1890. He graduated from both Princeton and Harvard Law School. He worked as an attorney in Philadelphia, but in 1917 he made the decision to join the French Air Service as part of the Escadrille Americaine, later known as the Lafayette Escadrille. When the United States entered the war 1918, while recovering from a leg wound, he transfer to the 103rd Pursuit Squadron of the United States Army Air Service with the rank of captain and was given command of the 13th Aero Squadron. While commanding the 13th Aero Squadron, he became the squadron's first ace of WWI. He ended the war with 7 confirmed victories and the rank of Major. For his service in WWI, he earned the Distinguished Service Cross. After the war, he returned to home to Philadelphia where he again practiced law. He wrote the book Fighting Airman: The Way of the Eagle. In 1924, because of his war experience he was selected to command 103rd Observation Squadron of the 28th Division, Pennsylvania National Guard. Biddle was the first commander of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. Charles Biddle passed away in 1972.
