artist biography
Per-Erik Valdemar Böklin was born on March 24, 1913 in Bärbo parish, Södermanland county. He was a Swedish painter and print maker.
Böklin moved to Stockholm in 1933 and initially studied architecture and worked in an architectural office between 1937 and 1938 and at the same time studying at Otte Sköld's målarskola (painting school). He then went on to study art at the Stockholm Konsthögskolan (Academy of the Arts) from 1938 to 1943. During this time he also took art study trips to Italy, Switzerland, France, England and the Netherlands.
In 1946 Böklin had his first solo exhibition at the Konsumrestaurangen, Sveavägen 68 in Stockholm. In 1949 he participated in the 'Ny Realitet' (New Reality) group exhibition - held at the Gävle Museum, and the Västerbottens county Art Gallery - alongside fellow Swedish artists Olle Bonniér, Randi Fisher, Arne Jones, Lage Lindell, Pierre Olofsson, Karl-Axel Pehrson and Lennart Rodhe. In 1950 the same group exhibited with ‘Konkret Konst’ (Concrete art) at the Örnsköldsviks Art Society, and in 1954 at the Stockholmskonkretister at the Hallands Museum.
His work was reproduced in influential post-war art publications including the 1953 'Art D’Aujourd’hui’ issue 'Nordic Abstract Art in Paris’ which printed his 'Blå kvadrat’ (1947) and his work ‘Dominantackord’ (1956) was included Vilhelm Bjerke-Petersen’s book 'Konkret konst’.
Böklin painted abstract works in different mediums including gouache, tempera, oil and mixed media and also produced lithographs and linocut prints.
In 1975 the Eskilstuna Art Museum held a retrospective 'Per-Erik Böklin - 25 års försök i konsten' (Per-Erik Böklin - 25 years of Experiments in Art). Böklin's last solo exhibition was at Galerie Bel'Art in Stockholm in 1992. The catalogue foreword was written by Swedish artist Oscar Reutersvärd (1915-2002).
Böklin is represented in the permanent collection at the Norrköping Art Museum and the Eskilstuna Art Museum
He passed away in 1999 on his farm in Limängen.
