Welcome to the Basic Life Support course. This course has been designed to provide you with an understanding of how to provide basic life support (BLS) in a manner that’s consistent with the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation (ANZCOR) guidelines.
The Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) has endorsed this course and successful completion earns 55 CPD Points from APNA.
After completing this course, you should have an understanding of:
- the steps involved in conducting effective basic life support
- the purpose of conducting cardiopulmonary resuscitation, otherwise referred to as CPR
- how to assess a situation, identify dangers and call for help
- how to assess a patient’s airway and manage airway obstructions
- how to perform rescue breathing and chest compressions, and
- procedures for and risks associated with the use of an automated external defibrillator, or AED.
This course is based on the Australian and New Zealand Committee on Resuscitation (ANZCOR) guidelines.
In order to successfully complete this BLS course you need to achieve a mark of 100%.
Following successful completion of this course, it is expected that you will then undergo a face-to-face clinical assessment by an approved assessor. Health care workers are expected to undertake this combined theoretical and clinical BLS assessment process annually.
Successful completion of this course will assist you with comprehending and implementing National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standard 9 (Recognising and Responding to Clinical Deterioration in Acute Health Care), specifically Action 9.6.1 – “The clinical workforce is trained and proficient in basic life support”.
A Certificate of Completion is issued on successful completion of the course and you are required to get an 100% pass mark to be deemed as understanding the content. It is recommended that training is conducted every 2 years to stay refreshed.
