Cape Breton RoadAt nineteen, Innis Corbett is transplanted from his home near Boston and suddenly finds himself back in the remote Cape Breton community where he was born, the reluctant and unwelcome guest of his uncle Starr. Innis had developed an addiction for stealing expensive cars (not for money but for pleasure) and for the marijuana he helps his best friend to sell. When bad habits catch up with him, he is deported to Canada, a punishment worse than prison.

At nineteen, Innis Corbett is transplanted from his home near Boston and suddenly finds himself back in the remote Cape Breton community where he was born, the reluctant and unwelcome guest of his uncle Starr. Innis had developed an addiction for stealing expensive cars (not for money but for pleasure) and for the marijuana he helps his best friend to sell. When bad habits catch up with him, he is deported to Canada, a punishment worse than prison.

Innis is unimpressed by his uncle, who gave up his dreams of leaving the island to repair televisions, chase women, drive a Lada and grow nostalgic on rum. Desperate to get away, Innis hatches the only escape plan he can, and starts to grow a secret cash crop of marijuana and looks for a car to steal. He bides his time smoking pot and doing whatever odd jobs he has to, full of unnamed need and pent-up anger. When Starr’s current girlfriend, an attractive woman in her late thirties, comes to stay while fleeing another relationship, Innis’ deep sense of longing fixes on her. He feels fierce desire, but also something he recognises as good and true. Starr cautions him, and a bitter jealous rivalry begins to rage between them, violence lying just under the surface. As summer arrives, Innis’ suffocation and the tension between the two men are palpable.

Though life in this small community bound by memory and blood cannot cure Innis immediately of his anger, the rugged landscape does work a change on him. He takes on the challenge of the wild and harsh north woods where a man can get lost, learns the names of plants and wildlife, sketches and studies the natural world, and diligently cares for his illegal seedlings. As he grows stronger, he faces himself in the mirror and feels an emerging sense of self-worth and coming manhood. He realises he is learning an enjoyment of hard work and its rewards, although his crop might be less worthy than those of his predecessors. Affectionately sheltering the plants from bad weather and hungry deer, he muses, “Was there a Gaelic word for pot?”

Cape Breton has spawned a wealth of contemporary literature, from Ann-Marie MacDonald’s Fall On Your Knees to Alistair MacLeod’s No Great Mischief and Lynn Coady’s Strange Heaven. The region’s rugged landscapes, rural life and distinctive Gaelic traditions converging with modern social pressures have captured the attention of readers internationally; as they have in the work of other Atlantic Canada authors such as Michael Crummey, Wayne Johnston and David Adams Richards. MacDonald set his novel in the 1970s, when a country area of Cape Breton could still be a truly isolated backwater, the phone service on a party-line system and listening-in a regular pastime. “I needed to create a world that was much more cut off, where it would seem like exile to Innis and where he could never be alone or anonymous.”

Innis recalls his parents’ fights about “down home”, how they would one day love it to tears and the next day complain how it had held them back. Much as he wants to get off the Cape Breton Road, it may be that all the emotions that make life worth living — “love and anger and disappointment and hope” — lead back to the island. Cape Breton Road is a compelling coming-of-age story raw with beauty and emotion.

Definitely give it a try!
This product is fantastic! The bottle is huge, and even with twice-daily use (two pumps each time, enough to cover my face, neck, and chest), it lasted me an impressive eight months. I just ordered my second bottle. The retinal formula is incredibly gentle and is the only retinal product I’ve tried that doesn’t irritate my highly sensitive skin. It’s lightweight, absorbs quickly, and leaves my skin looking smooth, plump, and healthy. I highly recommend it!

Soft, Hydrating, and Long-Lasting Moisture – Great Everyday Body Wash
Scent: Fragranced, Size: 30.6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I really like this Dove Body Wash Deep Moisture. It leaves my skin feeling super soft and hydrated, almost like I used lotion right after showering. The “24hr moisture” claim actually feels pretty accurate because my skin doesn’t dry out like it does with other body washes. It lathers nicely, smells clean and not too strong, and I also like that it’s made with no sulfates or parabens. The bottle is a good size (30.6 oz) so it lasts a while too. Overall, it’s a really solid everyday body wash and one of the best I’ve used for keeping my skin smooth and moisturized.

The body wash I reach for every time and my skin has never felt better
Scent: Fragranced, Size: 30.6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I have been through a lot of body washes over the years and this Dove Deep Moisture is the one I keep coming back to. The texture is thick and creamy, a little goes a long way, and it rinses clean without leaving any heavy residue behind. After getting out of the shower my skin genuinely feels softer and not dry or tight the way it does with some other washes. The scent is pleasant and mild, something like a clean, soft powder rather than an artificial floral or chemical smell. It does not linger too long which I actually prefer since heavy fragrances can be irritating. The formula with no sulfates and no parabens makes it a gentler option and I have noticed fewer issues with dry patches since switching to it. The 30.6 oz size is great for the price and lasts a good while even with daily use. This is just a reliable, high quality everyday body wash that does exactly what it promises. Simple and effective.

Perfect for Sensitive Skin – Gentle, Moisturizing and Long-Lasting
Scent: Fragranced, Size: 30.6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
If I could give it 10 stars, I would! This Dove Deep Moisture Body Wash is absolutely amazing and hands down my favorite Dove body wash so far. The size is large, so it lasts a long time and offers excellent value for the price, especially considering the quality. The texture is thick and creamy, not watery at all. It spreads very well on the skin and a little goes a long way. The scent is very pleasant, soft, and not overpowering—it actually reminds me of baby powder, which I personally love. It feels clean and comforting, not artificial or strong. While showering, it feels gentle and luxurious, and after rinsing, my skin feels soft, smooth, and well-hydrated, never dry or tight. This is especially important for me because I have sensitive skin, and this body wash has been perfect. Dove is an excellent brand, and I’ve tried several of their body washes over the years. This one was also recommended to me by both a dermatologist and a gynecologist, which gave me even more confidence in using it regularly. Overall, this is an outstanding product. I highly recommend it, especially for anyone with sensitive skin. If you’re looking for a moisturizing, gentle, and high-quality body wash, this one is a must-try. 💙 Super recommended!
