COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Moisture Management & Vapour Control in Painting Projects course. This program has been developed to provide you with the technical understanding and applied strategies required to prevent moisture-related failures in both residential and commercial painting environments.

Moisture and vapour intrusion are among the leading causes of coating breakdowns. This course begins by examining how moisture affects paint adhesion, surface integrity, and substrate performance. Participants will learn to distinguish between vapour control and moisture management, and understand the serious consequences of inadequate moisture handling—including blistering, peeling, mould growth, and substrate degradation.

Moisture behaviour within buildings is governed by physical principles that impact paint performance. This section introduces key concepts such as capillary action, vapour diffusion, and air movement. It also explores the functional differences between vapour barriers and vapour retarders, and identifies common pathways through which moisture migrates in floors, walls, and ceiling assemblies.

Different substrates react to moisture in different ways. This section examines common building materials—such as timber, plasterboard, concrete, fibre cement, and masonry—and explains how their porosity and absorption rates affect coating application and long-term performance. The condition of the substrate plays a crucial role in determining whether a surface is suitable for finishing.

Recognising the early signs of moisture-related problems is essential to project success. This section outlines how to identify bubbling, staining, cracking, delamination, and mould formation on surfaces. Participants will also learn to detect odours and tactile dampness that indicate deeper moisture presence beneath visible coatings.

Pre-application moisture testing is a vital step in ensuring finish success. This section explores the correct use of moisture meters and hygrometers, interpreting readings across various substrate types, and understanding accepted moisture content thresholds for painting work as per industry guidelines and manufacturer specifications.

Understanding the vapour permeability of coatings helps prevent moisture entrapment beneath paint layers. This section examines the difference between vapour-permeable and vapour-resistant products and explains how to select the right coating systems based on environmental needs and substrate conditions. The role of breathable paints in mitigating moisture problems is also highlighted.

Interior wet areas require specific moisture control strategies. This section focuses on painting practices in bathrooms, laundries, and kitchens—high-risk environments where vapour and condensation are prevalent. It also outlines how to coordinate with waterproofing contractors, manage indoor humidity, and plan painting work around finishing schedules.

Exterior painting projects must account for weather and ambient moisture conditions. This section addresses how rainfall, dew, and relative humidity affect surface readiness and finish integrity. It includes guidance on planning works around weather forecasts, drying surfaces post-cleaning, and adjusting product use based on exposure risks.

Vapour barriers are often required in specific construction assemblies. This section explains when and where vapour barriers should be used, how to paint over them without compromising adhesion, and how to check for compatibility between barrier membranes and primers to avoid delamination or chemical reaction.

Damp-prone areas require careful surface preparation. This section outlines how to remove efflorescence, treat mildew and staining, and dry out wet surfaces before applying finishes. It also introduces the use of sealers and stain-blocking primers to create stable painting surfaces even in areas with moisture history.

Selecting the right paint system for damp or wet conditions is key. This section explores the properties of moisture-tolerant paints, including elastomeric, mould-resistant, and water-repellent coatings. Manufacturer specifications for wet-area systems and proper multi-coat applications are reviewed to ensure durability and performance.

Proper drying relies on active site ventilation. This section explores how to use fans, heaters, and dehumidifiers to assist drying in enclosed or high-moisture zones. Participants will learn how to manage airflow, monitor moisture levels during drying, and make adjustments to support coating performance and schedule adherence.

Concrete and masonry can hold significant residual moisture from construction. This section focuses on understanding the moisture behaviour of slabs, walls, and blocks, and how to test them for readiness. Participants will learn techniques to manage rising damp and seal porous substrates before paint application.

Heritage projects require specialised moisture strategies. This section discusses challenges unique to older buildings, including the presence of breathable substrates such as lime render or mud brick. It outlines how to avoid modern paints that trap moisture and how to combine traditional materials with contemporary moisture-control coatings.

Timber surfaces are highly reactive to moisture. This section examines the expansion, shrinkage, and warping risks posed by damp conditions, and how to seal timber components to reduce ingress. Participants will learn to select primers that accommodate timber movement while still allowing moisture vapour to escape.

Preventing mould and mildew requires environmental awareness. This section explores the conditions that promote fungal growth, the use of mould-inhibiting additives and coatings, and cleaning or treatment procedures before and after painting in high-risk areas to minimise health and structural impacts.

Post-project monitoring supports long-term success. This section outlines how to inspect painted surfaces for early signs of moisture failure, engage with clients about ongoing indoor air quality concerns, and use feedback to refine techniques and material choices on future moisture-sensitive projects.

By the end of this course, you will be equipped with the knowledge, tools, and practical techniques to manage moisture and vapour risks effectively, ensuring long-lasting, compliant, and visually sound finishes in all types of painting and decorating projects.

Each section is complemented with examples to illustrate the concepts and techniques discussed.

Soft, but pricey, kinda shiny, and retains pet hair/lint
Size: Queen (90" x 90"), Color: Olive Green (No Comforter), Size: Queen (90" x 90"), Color: Olive Green (No Comforter)
So I’ll start by saying that I’ve bought many Bedsure products in the past. This one does not disappoint, but I also don’t feel like it’s 5 stars. It washed well and feels nice. Overall it’s a great duvet cover, but there’s three things I don’t personally like: 1. The price. Compared to their other covers, this one seems steep (though it’s probably the material that makes it more expensive?). 2. The material is somewhat shiny. I wasn't expecting that, and I don’t dig it. I’ve never had a cover that shines like this one does. 3. Pet hair retention is especially noticeable on this darker duvet (see photo). I’m sure this is either the fabric or the weave that causes this. For these three things, I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5. That said, if you can snag this during a sale (and you don’t have pets or don’t mind hair clinging to the cover), go for it!

Yes, it’s organic cotton!
Size: Queen (90" x 90"), Color: Ivory (No Comforter)
Yes, it’s organic cotton! After buying two other “100 % organic cotton” duvet covers on Amazon that turned out to be polyester/blends, I was happy to find an honest company and product. The duvet cover washes well, had no detectable odor out of the package, and is a good weight. I love the hidden zipper closure and find that it gets softer with use. I hope the zipper stays intact with prolonged use and gentle wash cycle. Note that I almost bought this in white but realized it’s a different material (bamboo) based on the product description. If you are looking at different colors, check the material carefully before buying.

I am 100% happy with this duvet set!
Size: King (104" X 90"), Color: 02 - Hotel Double Embroidery, Size: King (104" X 90"), Color: 02 - Hotel Double Embroidery
Wow! I am very impressed with the quality of this duvet set. I love the design of the subtle black double Embroidery. I thought it was made very well unlike one other person said in their review. I find it elegant and luxurious to look at and feel. It’s very comfortable and I like 100% cotton. This is a thicker cotton but it’s cool for sleeping. It’s also not too stiff, unless you want that then you can easily iron it to be that way. I prefer it right out of the washer and dryer for a classy but cozy look! They are exactly like a set I’ve had my eye on in a fine linen store in Palm Beach. Exceptional value!

Great quality and less wrinkles
Size: King (104" X 90"), Color: 01 - Hotel White
I love this duvet, the quality is great and the material makes it from wrinkling easily bc it is a thicker quality cotton. I will be ordering more duvet styles from this brand. This would hv been $150 duvet easily from bed bath and beyond for sure. I've bought so many expensive ones and this one is just as good if not better
