Huajatolla Heritage Foundation had a vision of a unique way to share the important history of Huerfano County in rural southern Colorado through an expanded version of a traditional cookbook. The process of creating this cookbook has been an awe-inspiring journey into the rich legacy of the area. The format not only shares recipes, but also history, stories, and pictures. This beautiful land in the shadow of the Spanish Peaks (the Huajatollas), has been sacred land loved by its inhabitants for millennia. Where there are people, food and stories are shared. In that spirit a group of community people worked together contacting people, collecting images and stories, taking pictures, typing recipes from scraps of paper, pouring over old local cookbooks, and most of all believing in the project. This is a mouthwatering collection of recipes and stories to delight the senses. It covers a wide spectrum of wisdom and ingredients from those who have come before right up to some neat contributions from Huerfano County kids. The Huerfano Heritage Cookbook received financial support from a Traditional Arts grant from Colorado Creative Industries. It was supported locally by San Isabel Electric Association and their parent company Basin Electric Cooperative. A portion of all sales will return to the Huajatolla Heritage Foundation for creating additional books in this important series.
